What is Needle Felting?

Needle felting is a form of soft sculpture in which a special needle with a notched shaft is used to felt wool. The notches on the needle catch the loose wool fibers as the needle is stabbed into the wool roving, and tangle them. (Wool roving is wool that has been combed, cleaned, and dyed, but has not been spun or woven.) As the needle is pulled out, there is no resistance. In this way, the fibers are tangled a little each time the needle is inserted. Felt is made when fiber is matted or tangled together, a process usually achieved with water and motion. Needle felting allows an artist to make felt in complex and precise shapes.
